Medicare for All – Four States

Massachusetts, California, and Colorado have pending legislation regarding a publicly financed, privately delivered universal healthcare program. Vermont passed a bill in 2011 that would have provided universal health care to its residents but abandoned it in 2014.

• Colorado – Colorado House Bill 23-1209 Concerning the Analysis of a Universal Health-Care System (2023)
  Status: Senate Committee on Appropriations Refer Amended to Senate Committee of the Whole (05/06/2023)
• Vermont – House Bill H.202 Act 48 (2011) (aka Green Mountain Care)
  Status: In 2014, a group of healthcare economists was unable to come up with a politically palatable financing plan whereby increased corporate and income taxes could bridge the gap between other revenue sources (primarily federal funds) and the estimated costs of Green Mountain Care. In December 2014, Governor Shumlin announced Vermont would abandon its plan for single-payer Green Mountain Care, citing "potential economic disruption."
